The city as a work of art

The synthesis made by the centuries between place and man, generated this city, which was built by hundreds of generations which have cut the stones and woven the ties of solidarity of its population. This is what the new cities can aim at as regards their distant futures, and the historical city must preserve to defend its identity and character.

The city, while a circuit of interests, an economical and social polo, an entity resisting even the territory’s suppression, becomes the summit of the human factory.

Even, as a Warsaw, where ruins caused by generalized bombing have been dynamited to completely destroy them, the space skeleton having been thus lost, it is possible for the city to be born again, be the will and the memory of the people stronger than extreme adversity and external extermination. This is the strength of an historical city.

In Oporto, one can feel that strength at every corner and on each face.
